The Team Members Behind “Songs for Disciples”

Although Lynn Zeigler and Charles Kniker are the authors of the tunes and texts of Songs for Disciples, three other persons have brought much to their collaboration.  We believe you should know more about them.

Kevin Head shot (Hymns Here Reveal)Dr. Kevin Schilling  has written 13 descants that are part of the hymn collection. Like Lynn, he was a faculty member at Iowa State University for many years. He taught oboe, bassoon, chamber music, and music theory. He served as the adviser for music majors in the Department of Music and Theatre at Iowa State. Kevin and Lynn played together in an ensemble Basically Baroque. They have toured together and recorded several selections on the CD,  Notes from Iowa. He is principal oboe in the Central Iowa Symphony and has played with the Des Moines Metro Opera Orchestra, and was principal oboist with the Des Moines Symphony and a member of the Des Moines Symphony Woodwind Quintet. Kevin Schilling holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern California and a Master of Music from Indiana University. In light of the many ways he has helped us, we have named the tune of  “Here Hymns Reveal A Holy One, ” SCHILLING in his honor and his family’s involvement with church music over three generations.

Kelsie's Picture

Ms. Kelsie Schmidt is a 2015 graduate of Iowa State in music education. She will begin her professional career teaching in Iowa in Fall 2016, with responsibilities for K-12 instruction in music for her school district.  She will also the teacher/leader of the band and orchestra. Kelsie has worked with Lynn and Charles since 2014 merging their tunes and texts, via computer, into print-ready song copies. In addition to her computer skills, she provided valuable suggestions and enormous enthusiasm for the “hymn project.” In her honor, we have named the tune of “Make a Difference” K SCHMIDT. We firmly believe she will make a difference as a caring educator.
